Quins off the bottom.

Aberavon Quins 29 Maesteg Celtic 12 With two victories over the Quins already this season the Celtic were firm favourites to complete the hat trick at Harlequin Road.Played under deplorable conditions with a roaring gale and monsoon like rain the players did well to provide a thrilling game.Playing into the gale the Quins pack was in dominating mood with strong ball carrying from Bowen, Oates, Cox and Dan Morgan. Cam Douglas showed his value as a utility player in his first start as scrum half and his thirty-metre dash set up a penalty chance which Ryan Pugh goaled. The Quins eight dominated and stuck to the pick and go strategy until the closing minutes of the half when inexplicably some Quins backs kicked possession away. Celtic took full advantage and a maul from a line out resulted in a try for Shaun Lambert. Poorer kicking gave more possession to Celtic and when the wind blew the ball over the line from a defensive line out Ryan Turner had a gift try converted by Mattie Harris. The 3-12 deficit was soon reduced by the rampant Quins and with the wind behind them they kept a tight stranglehold and continually pinned the Celts in there own 22.Smart work by the backs and a deft kick through for Ryan Pugh resulted in Alex Condon winning the race to touch down in the corner. Ryan Pugh converted superbly. Liam Oates capped a superb performance with a try from close in again improved by Pugh. The Celts fate was sealed as conditions worsened and the Quins introduced fresh legs. Superb work in the scrums from props Morgan and Helson buckled the opposing scrums and fly half Morley kicked well to keep up the pressure and Koulizakis was replaced after an impressive showing. Intense pressure saw the Celts trapped in their in goal area and a desperate clearing fell into the grateful arms of skipper Dan Morgan to score. Pugh obliged with the conversion. The bonus point win was secured when winger Kieran Brennan darted over in jury time. This bonus point win has taken us up from bottom position and maybe a starting point to climb further. Over the first half of the season the pack has stood up well against most opposition, A different story with the backs however mainly because of we being unable to field a settled combination owing to injuries, the call of higher placed clubs on our players and extended terms of duty with players in the armed forces. The two bonus points win and some good performances against highly placed clubs can give players and coaches the confidence to target potential victims in the second half of the season and in so doing consolidate our position in Division One.
