ABERAVON QUINS 12 BONYMAEN 12

The Quins promotion aspirations suffered a set back when a late rally by Bonymaen forced a draw. The Quins started brightly and Ryan Pugh, Marc Sheppard and Nathan Flynn were instrumental in creating try scoring chances that Bonymaen did well to thwart. Good driving play by the Quins eight with Dan Morgan and Tyler Hopkins well to the fore, forced a penalty and Sheppard obliged to put the Quins in front. Dominating territorially the Quins had plenty of possession with good scrummaging and Beynon taking plenty of line out ball, but the visitors defended well. Centres Gareth Pugh and Jack Dacey set up a good attacking position and Sheppard stretched the lead with his second penalty. Mike Hughes looked a dangerous runner for the visitors and occasionally stretched the Quins defence. Good line kicking from Sheppard and Ryan Pugh kept pressure on Bonymaen but the score remained 6-0 at the break.

The visitors started the second half with purpose and a great forward drive saw Nicky Thomas dive over for a try which went unconverted. A great touchline dash by No8 Con O’Callaghan almost brought a home score and replacement flanker Matthew Saker carried strongly to force a penalty and again Sheppard goaled. In the closing minutes the Quins eight drove over the line but no try was awarded. Moments later Sheppard landed his fourth penalty taking his season total past 200. With victory in sight the Quins failed to nail the restart and determined attacking running got Mike Hughes over for the try. Cunniffe converted from a wide angle to share the spoils.
