RIP Pat O'Brien

This morning we heard the sad news about the death of Pat O’Brien following illness.

Pat O’Brien was a character who was larger than life. As a Player, Captain, Coach, Committeeman and long serving Chairman of the Aberavon Green Stars he filled every role with distinction, dedication and total commitment. Throughout his long association with the Stars, he was a constant thorn in the side of the Aberavon Harlequins but thankfully through him, one of the great local rugby sporting rivalries started, prospered and continues to endure to this day.

Direct, blunt, single minded and extremely combative, Pat set the benchmark for nearly three generations of players to follow. If you didn’t know what it took to pull on the green, white and gold colours of the Green Stars, after a short conversation with Pat, you soon did.

It takes quite something to become a sporting legend in Port Talbot but we believe that Pat O’Brien earned that honour - a fact borne out by the many stories that will be told about him for a very long time to come.

Today, the sporting community of Aberavon and the town of Port Talbot is a much poorer place for the passing of a local legend.

As tough and uncompromising as the steel we make or the blood that we shed in making it - Farewell Pat O’Brien
