Haydn John Davies won a Cambridge Blue in 1958 and played twice for Wales in 1959. (The programmes had him as Cambridge University and Aberavon. No exact games can be pinpointed when he actually he played in for Wizards but it is given that he indeed played a handful of games as a teenager before going up to Cambridge)
The WRU are unsure of the exact date of his death but were informed that Haydn had died sometime between Christmas & 6th January. Hayden’s funeral will be held in Hertfordshire on Friday January 19th. Haydn settled in Elstree and was a chartered accountant and a financial director of Clive Lewis and Co (Surveyors). Haydn Davies came to the fore when he partnered Geoffrey Windsor Lewis in the Varsity match of 1958 playing in a very good Cambridge University side while studying law at Christ’s College there. He had attended Cowbridge Grammar School and gained Wales Secondary School caps against England and France in 1954. His senior rugby in South Wales was with Aberavon, from whom he was capped, but he is better remembered at London Welsh (at centre and outside half), though he also appeared for Millhill and Aberavon Quins. He toured South Africa in 1964 but did not play in the test and skippered London Welsh in 1964-65, being the last man to kick a goal from a mark at Old Deer Park.
Haydn lined up as Centre against England on 17th January 1959 at Wales National Stadium alongside another Aberavon great John Collins who played on the Wing winning 5-0.
