Aberavon Quins 15-24 Ystalyfera

Aberavon Quins 15 Ystalyfera 24

Ystalyfera kept alive their hopes of the West Central Div 1 Title with a deserved win at Harlequin Rd

The Quins started brightly and some smart handling put Lewis Cronin on a storming run that almost brought a score. The visitors weathered the storm and struck back dramatically when a Quins attack foundered and Luc Caines showed scorching speed while taking advantage of weak tackling to end a 70 metre run under the Quins bar. Steff Castle converted. The Quins returned to the attack spurning the advantage of the strong breeze by refusal to use the kicking game. Some good runs from No.8 Matthew Saker set up good attacking positions and support from O’Callaghan and Kinsey gained a penalty and Marc Sheppard goaled. Almost immediately Ystalyfera hit back when winger Josh Jarrett showed his pace by hacking on a dropped Quins pass and outstripped the cover in a 60-metre run. Castle converted from the touchline. The visitors were masters at the set scrums and also mauled well from the line out. A well-drilled maul resulted in a try for scrum half Andrew Jenkins and Castle converted. To make it 21-3 at half time.

Facing the wind in the second half it was expected that Fera would comfortably register their fourth try for a bonus point. The Quins defence tightened and flankers Kinsey and O’Callaghan were tireless tacklers. Wingers Cronin and Condon both ran strongly and locks Beynon and Bowen provided a stream of line out ball. Injury meant reorganising the home backs with Cooksley moving to full back and Dean Scully filling the centre berth. Cooksley revelled in the space offered him by indifferent Fera kicking and instigated several attacks. A great move started by Cooksley and scrum half Nathan Flynn also involving Saker, O’Callaghan and Cooksley ended with Flynn supporting a strong 40 metre run by Condon to score. Fera hit back and a succession of penalties were put into the corner but the Quins defended heroically and in the end with their effort waning Castle opted for the penalty goal. Sheppard placed a penalty kick close to the visitors line and Beynon secured the ball and a great forward surge saw replacement No8 Robbie Morgan Score. Sheppard converted . Although the Quins rang the changes and pressed hard they narrowly failed to narrow the gap enough for a losing bonus .
